Andy Gray began his professional career in 1973, is the only footballer to be named PFA Player and Young Player of the Year in the same season and was at one time the most expensive footballer in Britain. Having won almost every domestic honour, he joined Sky Sports in 1991 where, among other accolades, he has been named The Royal Television Society's Sports Presenter of the Year. Andy Gray has been at the forefront of British football for over three decades. From a fanatical footballing household in Glasgow, Andy worked his way to become a teenage prodigy at Dundee. But it was in England that Andy’s name was cemented as one of Europe’s top strikers.
At Aston Villa he scored 69 goals in 141 appearances and remains the only footballer to win both the PFA Player and Young Player of the Year in the same season. Greater glories awaited him at Everton, where he won the League, the FA Cup and the European Cup Winners Cup. Andy Gray was to have even greater success in his media career, and as part of Sky's football coverage revolutionised how the viewer watches football.
However, in January 2011, Andy Gray - together with Richard Keys - was sacked by Sky following "evidence of unacceptable and offensive behaviour." In 2011, it was reported that Andy Gray and Richard Keys had joined Talksport radio. In 2012, their Talksport show Keys & Gray won best sports programme of the year at the Sony Radio Academy awards.
"In recent years the name of Andy Gray has become synonymous with the world of soccer tactics. His enthusiastic and hugely entertaining analysis of the way the game is played has given millions a deeper insight into the game, expertly explaining everything from the offside trap to the Christmas tree formation.
In Flat Back Four, Gray looks in detail at what turns eleven men in shorts into a football team. He describes how systems like 4-4-2 and five at the back really work, reveals the secrets of catenaccio and total football and even explores the psychological tactics players use on the pitch. Drawing on personal memories, and the experiences of managers and players he has known throughout his career, Gray gives a colourful and fascinating insight into the workings of the modern game.
As well as examining the strategic tools available to the football coach, Gray analyses the tactics of classic games and great teams in footballing history, from Hungary's devastating 6-3 defeat of England in 1953 to England's astute 0-0 draw against Italy in Rome in 1997. Describing how these famous games were won, he shows how the teams involved played their part in football's evolution."
