First edition, first print hardback of CHILDREN FIRST AND ALWAYS: A Portrait of Great Ormond Street, by Derrik and Gillian Mercer and published by Macdonald & Co (Publishers) Ltd, London, UK, 1986. Signed by Derrik Mercer on the title page.

The book is in very good condition (Clean black cloth boards with gold lettering on spine) with only slight wear to the dust jacket, which is not price clipped (very slght creasing to the edges mainly around the spine). Internally, the pages are clean and tight and there are no tears and no other inscriptions. There is a gold address label attached to the bottom of the title page and a small blue "67" sticker at the top corner of the front endpaper, and some tanning to the pages.

The name of Great Ormond Street shines as a beacon of hope for sick children from all over the world. The authors spent a year at the hospital observing at first hand how this renowned institution works. Interspersed with their detailed accounts of operations, daily routines, the dedication of staff from porters to physiotherapists, technicians to top consultants, are eight minutely observed profiles of real children fighting a wide variety of grave afflication with enormous courage and resilience. Heart-warmingly optimistic, this book is a unique tribute to the people who strive to make sick children well.

Interwoven with the involving case studies is an intriguing account of the day-to-day running of the hospital, its elaborate and often neglected support systems and auxiliary staff. How do they cope with parents who come from all over the world? Satisfy the educational needs of those in long-term care? How do they organise the catering and the laundry? Who copes with the psychological pressures on parents and children? From Christmas festivities to the tragedy of bereavement, from the drama of emergency admissions to the eternal problems of inadequate finance, we have a unique opportunity to go behind the scenes of this complex and enclosed society. And built into the compelling human and medical narrative is a heart-warming celebration of and tribute to one of our most famous and well-loved international institutions."
