The book itself is in very good condition. The dust jacket, which is not price clipped, is in very good condition with only minor creasing to the edges (only shelf wear). The author's stunning debut shows a brilliant storytelling talent. This is not a conventional love story, for Sadie is not a conventional heroine. As she rises from a poor Jewish childhood in turn-of-the-century Manchester, to a place in London society, involvement in a brief, tragic marriage and acquisition of some fame, Sadie exerts a power over men - not through a classical beauty, which she does not possess, but by means of a much stronger, more subtle appeal. The story takes her from London to America and finally to German-occupied France. Many of the characters in SADIE are based on relatives or people from family stories. The author's maternal grandmother who was very much the inspiration for Sadie was a great hoarder of trivia - love letters, old photographs - as well as being an incredible raconteur.
