The Chalet School is a series of approximately sixty school story novels by Elinor Brent-Dyer, initially published between 1925 and 1970.
The school was initially located in Austria, moved to Guernsey in 1939, following the rise to power of the Nazi Party, then to "Plas Howell", a house on the border of England and Wales, then to St Briavels, close to the English - Welsh border and finally to Switzerland.
Chalet School books were originally published in hardback between 1925 and 1970. The novels were reissued in paperback format between 1967 and 1995. Usually with updated language. Some were more or less uncut, but many others were abridged to various extents, including chapters deleted from some titles. A few were split into two paperback volumes, and several were retitled.
Several authors have written books about the Chalet School. Some of them follow on from the last book of the series, and others attempt to fill in some of the "gaps" in the earlier years of the school. All books are published by Girls Gone By Publishers (formerly Friends of the Chalet School).
A Genius at the Chalet School was first published by W. & R. Chambers, Ltd, in 1956 and it is No.35 in the Chalet School series. It was published in Armada paperback in two volumes — A Genius at the Chalet School and Chalet School Fête.
"Nina Rutherford is orphaned by the death of her father in the waters of Lake Maggiore, where they had proposed to winter. Her father's cousin and her own guardian, Sir Guy Rutherford, comes to take her to England and send her to an English School. But Nina, a musical genius, has her own ideas and insists that she cannot go to any ordinary school.
On the way home, they fall in with the Chalet School, also going home. Nina makes friends with some lively members of the Fifth. As a result of this and what he learns of the school, Sir Guy decides to send his difficult young cousin to it.
Thanks to the understanding of the staff and Joey Maynard - who, incidentally, delights everyone by having her fifth daughter at the end of the term - Nina begins to realise that ordinary education is as important for her as her music, though that must always come first; and the book leaves her settling down as a happy Chalet School girl."
