Mary Frances Kennedy Fisher (1908 – 1992) was a preeminent American food writer. She was also a founder of the Napa Valley Wine Library. She wrote some 27 books of essays and reminiscences, many of which have become American classics, including a translation of The Physiology of Taste by Brillat-Savarin. Two volumes of her journals and correspondence came out shortly before her death in 1992. Her first book, Serve it Forth, was published in 1937. Her books are an amalgam of food literature, travel and memoir. Fisher believed that eating well was just one of the "arts of life" and explored this in her writing. W. H. Auden once remarked: "I do not know of anyone in the United States who writes better prose."
An Alphabet for Gourmets was published serially in Gourmet: December, 1948, January, February, March, April, July, August, September and November, 1949, an abed on the pleasures of food and drink. Contents with delightful drawings illustrate each letter of the alphabet: Intoduction; A Foreword; A is for dining Alone; B is for Bachelors; C is for Cautious; D is for Dining out; E is for Exquisite; F is for Family; G is for Gluttony; H is for Happy; I is for Innocence; J is for Juvenile dining; K is for Kosher; L is for Literature; M is for Monastic; N is for Nautical; O is for Ostentation; P is for Peas; Q is for Quantity; R is for Romantic; S is for Sad; T is for Turbot; U is for Universal; V is for Venality; W is for Wanton; X is for Xanthippe; Y is for Yak; Z is for Zakuski; From A to Z: The Perfect Dinner; Index of Recipes.
"In Alphabet for Gourmets, M.F.K. Fisher arranges a selection of her essays in a whimsical way that reveals the breadth and depth of her passion. From A for (dining) alone to Z for Zakuski, "a Russian hors d'oeuvre," Fisher alights on both longtime obsessions and idiosyncratic digressions. As usual, she liberates her readers from caution and slavish adherence to culinary tradition-- and salts her writings with a healthy dose of humor.
'Since Mrs. Fisher wrote An Alphabet for Gourmets, naturally it is witty, pungent and highly civilized, but also it has a special charm...It not only guides and titillates; it warms.' - Rex Stout, The New York Times Book Review
'Full of sound counsel, shrewd observation, luscious memories of dinners eaten and wines drunk, and a lot of common sense spiced with personal recollection. It's a good mixture.' - J.H. Jackson, San Francisco Chronicle
'Entertaining and knowledgeable.' - The New Yorker
Book Size 6 ¾" x 8 ¾". 239 pages. Each letter of the alphabet illustrated in colour by Ian Beck.
