First edition, first print hardback of TO SEA IN CARPET SLIPPERS: the Autobiography of an Ocean Racing Cook, by A. C. Sandison and published by Adlard Coles Limited, London, in 1966.
The book is in good condition (Clean green cloth boards with gilt lettering on spine), with some wear to the pictorial dust jacket which is price clipped (creasing & rubbing to edges and side edges together with creasing lines, some chipping & rubbing to spine edges and corners, a couple of one centimeter closed tears to top spine corners, edges a little frayed in parts). Internally, the pages are clean and tight and there are no tears and no inscriptions. There is light foxing to page ends.
'Sandy' Sandison describes in a uniquely readable manner, not only the trials and frustrations, but also the tremendous team spirit, zest for life and, above all, the huge amount of fun which the right attitude to ocean racing can provide.
Much of the author's sailing was done in Thalassa, a fairly large old yacht which was never in the front rank of the ocean racing results, but was well sailed by a very sporting owner who stood up nobly to hearty ragging from his obstreperous but whole-heartedly loyal crew. The owner of the yacht had a distinctive character and thoroughly enjoyed not only tough racing but also good meals, plenty of drink, and a full life ashore.
During this period Mr Sandison made a self critical survey of his future prospects as a top grade ocean racing crew and found himself wanting in the role of deckhand and watch-keeper. After much thought he hit on the idea of becoming a cook, always a key man in any yacht, and particularly so in the larger ocean racers in which eight or ten hungry and hard-working men have to be fed non-stop for up to six days.
Conditions below during a race are often appallingly difficult but ' Sandy ' Sandison surmounted them all and became a first class cook constantly in demand by the owners of many famous yachts. He has a rare humour and an unforgettable character which pervades this racy narrative.
This is a book which, as the title indicates, treats a hard subject in a lighthearted way and is a thoroughly entertaining read even for those knowing nothing of ocean racing. In fact, if you want to know what it can be like to take part in this boisterous sport, there is no more painless way than to read To Sea in Carpet Slippers.
