A Box Set of TWO 33rpm LP Records: 6700 021: MAHLER SYMPHONY No 9 in D MAJOR, featuring the Concertgebouw Orchestra (Amsterdam) conducted by Bernard Haitink. It was issued in 1969 on the Stereo Red Philips label. Included is an 8-page booklet containing background notes in German, English and French.
The records themselves are in very good to excellent condition, with no major scratches or marks that I can see. Really good sound quality, with only faint crackle at the start of Sides One & Two. Otherwise the playback is virtually faultless. Some light spindle wear. Labels very clean, no discernible spider marks.
The box is in generally very good sturdy condition with a short split in one corner and a thumbnail tear in one age, resulting in a slight bowing of the box lid. This is not a major problem as the box remains intact and pretty strong. The booklet and inner sleeves are in very good condition, with no wear to speak of.
The Ninth is the sphinx among Mahler's symphonies: an enigmatic work, poised between romantic and modern. It was first performed posthumously on June 26, 1912, under Bruno Walter at the first Vienna Music Festival. Mahler's last completed symphony, the Ninth is constantly associated with death-mysticism, although it is not possible to prove or refute this view. The score was completed in the autumn of 1909. At the time of his death, Mahler was working on a Tenth symphony. He had been aware that composers of such stature as Beethoven, Schubert, Bruckner and Dvorak had not produced more than nine symphonies, and he feared the Ninth would be his last, hence the confrontation with death that many Mahler scholars have read into the work.
